Civic Association demands that locals be employed
The first one’s concern is increasing poverty levels and the unemployment rate alleging government departments import their workforce at the detriment of local workers.
About 1 500 people gathered at the Sakhile Stadium to hand over memorandums to the Department of Correctional Services and Seriti on 5 July.
The Civic Association, a non-political community development organisation, organised the event to emphasise the importance of the prioritisation of local people for employment and business opportunities.
Copies of the memorandums are in the possession of the Standerton Advertiser and the first one’s concern is increasing poverty levels and the unemployment rate alleging government departments import their workforce at the detriment of local workers.
The memorandum refers to the extension of the facilities which created an expectation of appointing additional workers.
The following are demanded:
• Prioritisation of the Lekwa workforce
• Advertising job and business opportunities locally
• Water supply challenges be addressed
• Spiritual workers be compensated accordingly
A deadline was given as before the end of August.
The Seriti-memorandum differed in as much as alleging an inadequate impact of the mine on the economic development in the community, unilateral applications of the Social Labour Plan and the corporate forum not reporting to the community.
The following are demanded:
• Ring-fencing of jobs for locals
• A programme aimed at encouraging the community into business
• Establishment of a business hub and funding model
• Encouraging contractors to ensure local employment
• Direct reporting to the community on progress
The association handed over the memorandums to representatives of both parties and it was duly signed. They gave them before the end of August to respond.
