MPUMALANGA – The Secunda and Middelburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation (Hawks) teams cracked down on a 35-year-old suspect and seized mandrax worth more than R2-million near Nelspruit yesterday, 28 August.
The suspect will appear in the Nelspruit District Court today, 29 August.
He was arrested in a joint operation led by the Secunda and Middelburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation teams assisted by the Nelspruit TRT, after information surfaced of a vehicle that was transporting drugs from Mozambique to South Africa.
The vehicle fitting the description was spotted and intercepted on the N4 highway. Mandrax tablets were found in the vehicle, with an estimated street value of R2.2-million.
Maj-Gen Zodwa Mokoena, provincial head for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, applauded the members’ efforts in the arrests of the drug peddlers.
“The recent arrest comes a few days after we dismantled a multi-million rand narcotics laboratory. I also appreciate the community’s commitment in providing information about criminal activities in the province,” said Maj-Gen Mokoena.
