Protesters say ‘no’ to gender-based violence

The alleged rape and killing of a UCT-student and gender-based violence countrywide sparked a flame of protests with Standerton being no exception on Thursday, 12 September.

A group consisting of women, men and children finally converged in front of the Standerton Magistrate’s Court after they marched from the Sakhile Stadium.

Under the banner of the ANC, a strong message was sent that violence against women and children will not be tolerated.

Placards depicting the protesters’ views on the death penalty and abuse were held.

“I fully support the protest,” Mr Anthony Manickum, a resident, said.

“We are fast becoming the rape and abuse centre of the world.”

Mr Manickum voiced his opinion on what a real man entails, saying that men need to love, respect and protect women and children.
