Charlie and Norma say goodbye to South Africa

Seniors invite people to next meeting on 9 October

SECUNDA – Members of the Secunda Senior Citizens’ Club played Bingo and exchanged recipes at their meeting on Wednesday, 25 September.

The recipe exchange is an annual action and they call it ‘Ouma se Kombuis.’

Two of the members, Mr Charlie and Ms Norma Peet said goodbye to the club as they are emigrating to England.

The couple lived in Liverpool in England and moved to South Africa 46 years ago.

“We were young and adventurous when we left England then and there was a shortage of jobs then,” said Mr Peet.

“We came to South Africa for work. I worked as a boilermaker in the Vaal Triangle for 13 years before moving to Secunda.”

Mr Peet retired four years ago and the couple decided to move back to England as all four their daughters and six grandchildren are living in England.

“We have mixed feelings about leaving, we are saddened and heart broken to leave, but we are also excited for the new chapter ahead,” said Ms Peet.

“South Africa has problems like any other country, but it was a fantastic country to live in for 46 years,” said Mr Peet.

Ms Pam Kotze, chairman of the club, said it is a sad day for the club to see the Peets leave and they wish them the best for their future.

The Secunda Senior Citizens’ Club’s next meeting is on Wednesday, 9 October at 10am at the St. Peter’s Church in Secunda.

Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting.

The club meetings take place every second Wednesday at 10am at Davies Court.

The committee of the club tries to organise fun things for the members to do at each meeting and the often go on outings.
