Siyanqoba Perfoming Arts wants to go places

Siyanqoba Performing Arts wants to fight gender-based violence.

eMBALENHLE – Siyanqoba Performing Arts is fighting gender-based violence through art.

The group is using their skills and talent to raise awareness about this pervasive issue with an aim to put a stop to it.

Mr Mandla Sibiya, managing director, said women’s fight against violence is a constant battle and they have joined the fight in support of the victims.

“I want violence against women to end and art is my tool to do that.

“We are working on a play, Sekwanele, which addresses the issues of gender-based violence.

“We are calling on all men to rally behind women and to support them.”

The group was established in 2009 and consists of 28 members between the ages of eight and 39.

It is aimed at keeping the youth off the street and to promote and mentor talents in art.

Since its inception, the group has raised over 10 artists that are now in the mainstream arts groups.

Mr Sibiya said their group seeks to deal with social ills, such as crime, poverty and substance abuse.

It is always difficult to reach their goals due to their limited resources.

He called on local businesses and residents to support them.

The group will be performing in Cape Town in November and needs donations to make the trip a success.

“We are excited about this, but we are stressed, because we still do not have any sponsors.

“We request any form of help, such as transport, costumes, tracksuits, T-shirts or travelling bags, sneakers and instruments such as drums or marimbas.

“We are willing to do presentations or demonstrations. We thank everyone who has supported us thus far.”
