Jaco Jordaan must plead his case in May

EVANDER – The trial of Mr Jaco Jordaan, a businessman from Heidelberg who is being charged with investment fraud amounting to more than R100-million, will begin in May.

Jordaan was arrested two years ago for allegedly swindling large amounts from more than 100 residents in Kriel and Secunda. Most of these victims were either pensioners, soon retiring or people who received disability pension pay-outs.

Local recruiters who have not yet been arrested, identified and convinced the victims to invest with Stocktraders SA.

Police investigators uncovered the large-scale Ponzi scheme when investors’ monthly pay-outs dried up.

Jordaan again appeared in the Evander Regional Court on Thursday, 23 January with his new legal team in tow. During the brief appearance, the matter was postponed to 26 May for trial.

Mr Jordaan will first be asked to plead.

Mr Louwrens Grundlingh, a lawyer representing the victims, and several of his clients met outside the courthouse soon after a grinning Mr Jordaan left the building.

Mr Grundlingh said Mr Jordaan’s assets that have been attached and sold on public auction, included a boat, sports cars and properties. His estate agency was liquidated.

“Taking into consideration the documents and evidence handed over to the police, I think the state has a strong criminal case against Mr Jordaan,” Mr Grundlingh said.

According to a reliable source close to the investigation, Mr Jordaan’s other assets also included an oil refining company that was allegedly used to launder the investment money.
