Sasol obtains final court interdict against three Mpumalanga local Community Forums
In an effort to proactively resolve matters, the company held numerous engagements with the affected community structures. However, attempts to find a resolution was unsuccessful and threats continued to escalate.
On Friday, 31 January 2020, Sasol South Africa (PTY) LTD and Sasol Mining (PTY) LTD were granted a final interdict order by the Middelburg High Court against three local Community Forums, their leaders and members in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.
The company took this legal step to ensure the safety of its employees and contractors after threats were made to operations, projects and its employees were intimidated.
In an effort to proactively resolve matters, the company held numerous engagements with the affected community structures. However, attempts to find a resolution was unsuccessful and threats continued to escalate.
The final court interdict, which has immediate effect, prohibits respondents from:
- Interfering with the company’s Secunda operations including mining operations;
- Entering company’s premises or sites;
- Threatening or intimidating any Sasol employees, contractors or project partners;
- Picketing within 500 meters from the Sasol sites or premises; and
- Blocking national or private roads leading to Sasol premises or sites.
