Raffle raises R8 800 for cop with cancer
This always chirpy 56-year-old court orderly at Evander Magistrate’s Court, has just been re-diagnosed with cancer.
EVANDER – Tears welled up in everyone’s eyes when W/O Piet Groenewald received an envelope with the money raised by a raffle on Friday, 14 February.
W/O Graham Grimsdell and his wife Eileen from Grimmies Music and Photography sponsored an iJam battery speaker system worth R3 000 as the raffle prize.
Ms Lisa Kruger is the lucky winner of the speaker system.
The raffle raised R8 800 which the Groenewalds can use towards extra expenses they will incur with W/O Groenewald’s second cancer battle.
This always chirpy 56-year-old court orderly at Evander Magistrate’s Court, has just been re-diagnosed with cancer.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. The prostate was surgically removed and W/O Groenewald was in remission until recently when his cancer cell count again flared up. He must now go for a number of tests to determine where and how wide the cancer has spread.
This dedicated police officer with 30 years of service at Evander Police Station is also suffering from severe arthritis that attacks his spinal cord.
His friends and colleagues decided to fight this battle by his side. Capt Chris Venter is organising a golf day for W/O Groenewald and Lee Martin who is also battling cancer.
The golf day will be played at Walker Park Golf Club on 29 February.
They still need organisations and businesses to sponsor the holes and prizes.
Anyone who wants to sponsor a prize or who wants to book a place for the day can contact Capt Venter at 082 499 4387.
