eMBALENHLE – A police dog was used on Monday, 17 February, to find the leg of a woman who was run over on the R546 on Sunday night, 16 February.
The impact of vehicle was so great that the woman was killed and both her legs ripped off.
According to Const Busisiwe Mthethwa, spokesman for eMbalenhle Police, the woman and her friend were walking along the road at about 7.30pm when the accident happened.
The women were apparently hitchhiking to Standerton when they encountered a swarm of mosquitoes. One of them (the deceased) ran to the opposite side of the road to avoid being bitten.
The two women were talking to each other on opposite sides of the road when a vehicle stopped.
While the friend was speaking to the driver, she heard the screeching of car tyres and saw the woman who was on the opposite side of the road being struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Only one of the woman’s legs was found next to her body. The emergency services could not find the other leg due to bad light. The provincial EMS, the Govan Mbeki municipal fire brigade and the police were on the scene.
Delta 1 Search and Rescue, the police’s K9 unit and ER24 went back to the scene on the morning of 17 February, where Lt-Col Nancy Ntuli together with Sgt Tinalia van der Merwe and her K9 partner, Dona, made the discovery of the other leg nearly 500m from where the impact happened. The leg was taken to the mortuary.
