eMBALENHLE – A con man pretending to work for a cellular network service provider allegedly defrauded a local man out of R6 200.
The victim received a call from someone pretending to be an employee of the service provider, claiming that a stranger was trying to conduct a SIM swap on the victim’s cell number.
The con artist gave the victim a number to dial to ward off the SIM swap.
The victim initially ignored the caller, but the perpetrator’s calls persisted.
He eventually switched off his phone.
However, when he later switched on his phone, he realised that money had been withdrawn from his bank account.
Police warned locals to be cautious and not to entertain strangers.
Also never enter any digits after such a call as this will give the scammer access to a One Time Pin number with which he can change your phone’s PIN and hack into your bank accounts and even loot airtime and data from your phone.
