Dance schoolsport competitions continue online
Students who made the finals will receive digital certificates (gold, silver or bronze) that they can print for themselves and give in to schools for merits once the lockdown ended.
SECUNDA- Solo Dance Schoolsport (SDS) is continuing with their dance competition online during lockdown.
This a school-based sport designed for any age school kids on a grass root level.
SDS began in 2019 under a different name and changed its name to Solo Dance Schoolsport in 2019. SDS is also an associated member with DanceSport South Africa which is the mother body of dance in South Africa. It is also registered with the different Sport Confederations and with SASCOC. The type of genre and styles is to accommodate different dance backgrounds and is all inclusive.
These dances are made up in medleys which contain different styles of dancing, such as rhythm and movement, street Hip Hop, solo Latin, performing arts, couple’s ballroom and Latin.
“Because of the lockdown and because the school specialises in solo dancing and the students don’t necessarily need partners, they decided to do online fixtures to keep dancing active and to still give children the chance to dance at home and keep fit. That means all they need is music and a dance area in the comfort in their own home,” said Mr Christiaan Els, Chairman of Solo Dance Schoolsport.
Any school student can join the online dance fixtures, it is for free. If they are not registered, there is an extra link on the form where students can register online and where they only have to pay a R190 registration fee for that year. They will receive a registration number which enables them to take part in fixtures and exams.
Mr Els said there are different age groups and just like normal competing sports, girls will compete against girls and boys against boys. If there are not enough boys in a category, they will have to compete against the girls in their age group.
“Dancers will still be eligible to progress towards the district competition once the lockdown is lifted. The online dance competitions better the students; dancing as they can record themselves and if they aren’t satisfied, they can re-record themselves to send in the better video.”
Students who made the finals will receive digital certificates (gold, silver or bronze) that they can print for themselves and give in to schools for merits once the lockdown ended.
“Our aim is to have dance as sport in all the schools across the country so that the passion for dance can be practiced in any school. This is a physical activity which learners just love to do. Once a child hears music they will move,” said Mr Els.
