Mr Francois Pretorius, a jeweller from Bethal who faces two charges of murder, applied for bail in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court today, 20 May.
He is accused of murdering Dr Hannes and Ms Ibel Beukes at his farmhouse outside Bethal on 18 March.
The elderly couple’s bludgeoned bodies were later found in the boot of their car which was hidden away in a veld near the Beukes’ home.
The police discovered the bodies after a motorcyclist spotted the vehicle in the veld close to the Bethal Dam and alerted the police.
Mr Pretorius fled Bethal after the murders and eventually gave himself up six days later and was arrested on his father-in-law’s farm near Belfast.
The bail application will continue on Monday, 25 May.
