Lekwa explains the electricity situation in Standerton

The municipality made an appeal for electricity to be used sparingly.

The municipal manager of the Lekwa Municipality said in a communication notice that Lekwa will be implementing partial rotational load shedding when necessary.

According to the statement, Lekwa is licensed by Nersa as a distributor of electricity.

The municipality receives bulk supply from Eskom at the A-, B- and C- substations.

The statement went on to say that the current notified demand is exceeded in winter for years now. The municipality has incurred many irrecoverable expenses through penalties and interest charged by Eskom.

The municipal manager, Ms Gugu Mhlongo-Ntshangase, mentioned that attempts have been made as far back as early 2014 for an upgrading of the notified maximum demand. According to her, the application has not yet been approved although Eskom issued a quotation for an upgrade to 80MV.

She added that Eskom decided to no longer allow the aforementioned demand to be exceeded at all municipalities since the beginning of the year.

“Lekwa has applied for an interim increase from 55MVA to 67MVA,” she concluded.
