Evander Gold Mine praised for feeding the hungry

Evander Gold Mine donates to the needy

HIGHVELD – Evander Gold Mine donated food parcels to more than 500 families in the Govan Mbeki municipal area since the lockdown began.

The donations are part of the mine’s social relief programme that is aimed at helping the needy during the Covid-19 lockdown period.

The ‘Covid-19 Programme of Relief and Assistance’ helps with alleviating the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic the communities where the mine is operating.

Ms Levhuwani Ramuedzisi, HR manager, said the mine cares about its communities and will continue to contribute to these communities.

She said the initiative began in April with the distribution of food and hygiene hampers to vulnerable families in the communities through organisations with which the mine has developed relations over time.

“In most of the communities we delivered the food parcels door-to-door to vulnerable families that we identified in the immediate communities in the townships and farms around our operations.

“We also provided information leaflets with regards to Covid-19 which also included details on how to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Other distributions took place through community organisations, including those that care for orphans and vulnerable children, disability centres, child-headed households, old-age homes and other NGOs.

“The Department of Social Development and the Govan Mbeki Municipality also helped us to identify families and organisations in need of assistance.”

The food and hygiene hampers are designed to feed a family of five for a period of 30 days.

Each hamper weighs about 42kg, with additional 12kg maize also provided.

In the light of the ongoing pandemic the mine will continue its initiatives to assist some of its most vulnerable stakeholders in the months ahead.

The Kinross Golden Oldies was one of the organisations that benefited from the initiative.

Ms Ethel Makhele, Kinross Golden Oldies founder, thanked the mine for the donations.

“We are happy that the mine remembered us, we were helpless and wondered what we will do to have food, but now all our worries are gone.

“May they continue to take care of the needy, especially the elderly and children.”

The mine donated to food parcels to the House of Praise Tabernacle, Where over 35 families benefitted.

Past Solly Mahlangu praised the mine for this initiative and encouraged them to continue helping the communit, especially in these difficult times.
