Bethal town a mess

It took more than seven loads and a whole day for the team to remove the waste.

BETHAL – Refuse removal has not been collected for more than two weeks.

Social media has been abuzz with images of the sad state of Bethal town with refuse strewn across the town.

According to Mr Benzi Soko, spokesperson for Govan Mbeki Municipality, refuse has not been collected because employees do not have personal protective equipment (PPE).

“It would be wrong and dangerous for them to continue without the PPE needed,” said Mr Soko.

AfriForum, together with Mr Jacques Pieterse who donated the use of his 7-ton truck, made arrangements for refuse to be removed in Bethal on Tuesday, 30 June.

“We had to jump in and clean Bethal. The town looked like a pigsty,” said Mr Hennie Bekker, District Coordinator, Lowveld District AfriForum.

It took more than seven loads and a whole day for the team to remove the waste.
