SECUNDA – Police uncovered the work of a syndicate when they arrested two bicycle thieves yesterday, 14 July.
The duo was apprehended by SSS Security while being in possession of stolen bicycles.
The past few weeks have seen the theft of bicycles, mainly expensive road cycles and mountain bikes, skyrocket.
It appears that a group of thieves operate throughout Secunda during the day and night, targeting houses where they know bicycles will be found.
The criminals lift electric gates off the guide rails to enter yards and get to the bicycles.
According to W/O Marietha Wright, these bicycles are then taken to a central location, dismantled and smuggled across the border to Zimbabwe.
The men arrested yesterday will soon appear in court.
The bicycles found in their possession have been identified by the legitimate owners.
W/O Wright said the other members of the syndicate are still out there.
They are well dressed and the police suspect that the leader is a man often spotted wearing a black leather jacket.
She urged residents whose bicycles have been stolen, to report it to the police.
She is compiling a database and therefore asked victims to send her photos of their stolen bicycles, as well as their contact details.
W/O Wright thanked residents who have already sent her images and videos of the stolen bicycles and thieves.
Anyone with video footage of these thieves is also asked to urgently contact W/O Wright at 082 856 9322.
