SANBS needs recovered Covid-19 patients to donate plasma
Blood service does research on convalescent plasma and pandemic
SECUNDA – Mr Moeketsi Mofokeng was the first person in the Highveld area who donated convalescent plasma after recovering from Covid-19.
He visited the Secunda branch of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) on Thursday, 27 August to donate plasma.
Blood plasma from disease survivors is rich in antibodies and scientists believe convalescent plasma therapy can help Covid-19 patients.
Mr Mofokeng decided to donate convalescent plasma to save lives and he encouraged other patients, who recovered from Covid-19, to also donate convalescent plasma.
Ms Dot Prinsloo, donor relations practitioner of the Secunda branch of the SANBS, said the SANBS is currently doing research on the possibilities of convalescent plasma.
She urged patients who have recently recovered from Covid-19 and want to donate plasma, to contact Ms Cynthia Nyoni at 011 761 9279 to see if they are eligible to be part of the SANBS’s convalescent plasma registry.
