Amnesty period open until end of January 2021

The amnesty serve as an chance to surrender firearms, firearm parts and/or ammunition which is unlawfully in the possession of a person.

The Minister of Police, Gen Bheki Cele, declared a new firearm amnesty for a period of six months, commencing from 1 August 2020 to 31 January 2021.

The previous amnesty period which was also intended for a period of six months, between December 2019 and May 2020 was derailed by the unexpected Covid-19 pandemic.

The amnesty serve as an chance to surrender firearms, firearm parts and/or ammunition which is unlawfully in the possession of a person.

The public is urged to surrender illegal firearms or any excess, obsolete and redundant legal firearms.

A person who surrenders his or her firearm during the period of amnesty, will be required to complete forms at the nearest police station, and may apply for a license for the weapon.
