Disgruntled residents from the Gert Sibande District protested over vacancies for traffic officers that were recently advertised by the Department of Public works, Roads and Transport.

According to Mr Stanley Trust, organiser of the march, they began protesting on 6 January.

They dispute the hiring criteria and are angry because only 10 positions were allegedly allocated to the Gert Sibande Region.

The grievances and demands stipulated in their memorandum include the following:

• Advertised traffic officer’s positions of which only 10 were allocated for this region

• They demand the 10 internship learner‘s residential addresses to be confirmed

• A total of 25 more positions to be made available

• Management to address the community.

• An equal number of learners to be allocated per sub-district

The Highvelder sent media enquiries to Mr Mpho Gabashane, media liaison officer for the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport as well as Mr David Nkambule, head of communications for the department.

The Highvelder awaits a response.
