eMBALENHLE – Six learners from local schools in eMalenhle who obtained distinctions received bursaries last week.
Evander Gold Mines awarded full bursaries to two learners from Kusasalethu Secondary School and four from K.I. Thwala Secondary School.
According to Mr Oriel Shikwambana, operational manager at Evander Gold Mines, the full bursaries include registration, accommodation and tuition fees.
“We are giving these learners full bursaries because of their hard work, specifically by getting distinctions in maths and science, but we want them to also work hard at tertiary level.
“We will be monitoring their yearly performance as per the clause in contract between us and them,” said Mr Shikwambana.
Parents welcomed the helping hand from Evander Gold Mines because some of them come from poor families who cannot afford to send their children to university.
“I am grateful that Simphiwe Malinga received this bursary. He was working hard for the whole year and although it was difficult because of Covid-19, he got seven distinctions.
“This is unusual for a learner from a township school where learning resources are scarce,” said Ms Phindile Sibande, a parent who is also a teacher at Kusasalethu Secondary School.
Simphiwe Malinga from Kusasalethu Secondary School left eMbalenhle on Sunday to study at the University of Cape Town.
Kenny Mahlangu from K.I. Thwala Secondary School obtained distinctions in maths and science, Bandile Ngwemya from K.I. Thwala
Secondary School achieved distinctions in maths and science, Kenneth Mahlangu from K.I. Thwala Secondary School obtained three distinctions including maths and science, and Sigcobile Matini from K.I.Thwala Secondary School obtained three distinctions, including for maths and science.
