SAVF celebrates International Family Day in eMzinoni
Family Day was celebrated under the theme “Families and new technology” because of a changing world.
eMZINONI – The South African Women’s Federation (SAVF) celebrated International Family Day at the Wellas Section sports field in eMzinoni on Friday, 21 May.
Family Day was celebrated under the theme “Families and new technology” because of a changing world.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 15 May of each year shall be observed as the International Day of Families.
The day reflects the importance that the international community attaches to families as basic units of society as well as its concern regarding their situation around the world.
Ms Hlobisile Nxumalo, office manager for SAVF, said new technology is changing the way families are interacting.
“We encourage family cohesion regardless of the distance because technology works as a tool for bonding. We encourage and teach communities that family is not only a blood relative, but every human being is part of your family because we need each other,” said Ms Nxumalo.
eMzinoni Police also encouraged the community to use technology, such as social media, to report crime, though community members raised their concern that to use social media, they need money, but Sgt Cythia Mtsweni from eMzinoni Police Station, said it is also easy to reach the police by phoning 10111.
The SAVF encouraged young people to educate their elders to use technology because everyone has cellphones.
Ms Nxumalo also said situations caused by Covid-19 and restrictions bring people closer to technology and make it an easy way to unite people and families.
The SAVF’s offices are open for social welfare problems to communities and they can be contacted on 017 647 3345.
