Cat caught in snare in Secunda

SECUNDA – A cat was caught in a snare and severely injured in Secunda last week. A concerned member of the public contacted Feral Watch and TNR about the tabby cat that was caught in a snare in Ext 22.
According to Ms Heidi Van Zyl, director for Feral Watch and TNR, it is believed that the cat was unable to hunt for food after being caught in the snare and made its way to a house to find an alternative food source.
The animal was trapped and handed over to Ms Van Zyl on Wednesday, July 7, and taken for emergency veterinary treatment.

The cat had extensive injuries, however, he is safe and currently recovering in the care of Feral Watch and TNR founder, Ms Nicolette van Zyl.
It was surprising for the team that the cat had survived being caught in the snare as in most cases they are never found and die a very slow and painful death.
“The snare was around his body and front paw. I could not believe how fit and strong he was despite his injuries and being in the snare for so long.
“We are not sure if we will release him back into the wild in fear of him ending up in another snare,” said Ms Van Zyl.
Because Feral Watch and TNR is an NPO, they depend on public donations to assist with such cases and the ever-growing veterinary bills.
