Jaco Horn appointed as CPF chairperson in Secunda

“New blood is not always a bad thing. We look forward to new initiatives and ideas,” said Lieut-Col Karelse.

SECUNDA – Mr Jaco Horn officially took on his new role as CPF chairman of Secunda when the new CPF committee was appointed at the police station on Tuesday, July 6.

Mr Imraan Salajee is the new deputy chairman and Ms Sharona Wright is the deputy secretary.

Lieut-Col Kawa Karelse welcomed Mr Horn and the new committee and said he looks forward to working with them as a team.

“You are here to help us and we are here to help you. We rely on the CPF,” said Lieut-Col Karelse.

The CPF is a legal community structure established in terms of the Police Act, it is mandated to facilitate community-police relations and serves as the mouthpiece of the community with the police.

“New blood is not always a bad thing. We look forward to new initiatives and ideas,” said Lieut-Col Karelse.

He said that over the past four years the crime rate has decreased, however, there are certain crimes such as housebreaking (burglary) that are still a concern and that need closer monitoring with the help of the CPF.

Lieut-Col Karelse highlighted false messages related to crime that do the rounds on social media.

“There have been many messages doing rounds of current highjackings taking place here in Secunda at robots and stop streets which are not true.

“We do not want our community to live in fear. Our vision and job as police are to create a safe environment.

“We need to be careful what we share on social media groups,” said Lieut-Col Karelse.

Mr Horn said he would like to see a safer town where children are able to be children and can ride their bicycles in green strips without fear.

“I would also like to see more people join the CPF and make Secunda a safer place,” said Mr Horn.

He said he works with a great team and is familiar with the police, and he sees these working relationships growing.

Capt Marietha Wright thanked local security companies for assisting the police in combating crime.
