Shacks go up in flames in eMbalenhle – tenants lose everything

The community helped firefighters to extinguish the fire that beginning to spread to neighbouring homes.

Firefighters were summoned to extinguish a fire that left 10 tenants without shelter at Ext 12, eMbalhenle, on Monday, July 19.

Although some tenants managed to salvage a few of their belongings, others lost everything.

They told the newspaper that they don’t know what was the cause of the fire which originated in one of the rooms.

Some had to rush home from work and save what they could.

A man who had been sleeping after working a night shift was rescued by others when they saw smoke billowing out of another room.

The community helped firefighters to extinguish the fire that beginning to spread to neighbouring homes.

Every winter there are reports of shack fires, some of which claimed the lives of people. Many of these fires emanate from electricity defaults, candles and even fuel stoves.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality also conducted fire awareness campaigns where communities were given information on how to protect themselves from fire and on how to stay safe.

Const Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle police spokesperson, said they are investigating the course of the fire and there’s are no injuries or death cases reported.
