Dr Akarue joins Mediclinic Highveld in Trichardt as new specialist paediatrician
Newbie already feels welcome in Trichardt community.
Dr Okwudili Edward Akarue recently joined Mediclinic Highveld as their newest specialist paediatrician.
He grew up in Nigeria and studied towards his medical degree at the University of Nigeria after he finished high school.
“In Nigeria, your parents literally decide for you what you must do after school,” said Dr Akarue.
“When we received the entrance application forms from the university, my mother, who is a retired teacher, chose a medical degree as my first, second and third choice of studying as she wanted me to become a doctor.
“The choice of university was also hers and again she wrote at the first, second and third option, the University of Nigeria.”
Dr Akarue, who completed his high school at a special science school in Nigeria, described this university as one of the top universities in Africa.
After he completed his degree, he went overseas and worked in the United Kingdom and later he moved to the USA where he completed his residency and special training in paediatrics at a children’s hospital of New Jersey and University of Medicine and Dentistry.
He later relocated to the countryside in Missouri, USA and stayed in a small town called Cape Giradeau that consisted mostly of a farming community.
He worked at the South East Hospital in this town for many years before returning to South Africa in 2017.
Dr Akarue has also worked at numerous hospitals in Gauteng and the Vaal Triangle.
He enjoys working with his hands and likes to fix things around the house.
“I do all my own handyman work.
“I probably would have pursued a career where I could have worked with my hands if I did not become a doctor,” said Dr Akarue.
He said he feels welcome in the Trichardt area as the people are warm and friendly.
He is ready and looking forward to becoming part of the community in Trichardt and the surrounding area and to receive his new young patients at his practice at Mediclinic Highveld.
In his free time, he enjoys jogging, boxing and exercising at the gymnasium.
“I like to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to keep fit.
“As a doctor, I believe in practicing what I preach.”
