Residents of Ward 5 in Standerton block gates to electrical department

“The community is fed-up after different reasons were given for the delay in fixing their electricity,” Mr Thabethe said.

Lekwa Community Forum (LCF) joined the residents of Draaihoek of Ward 5 in their fight to restore electricity on Wednesday, September 1.

According to Mr Sello Tsotetsi, communications officer, they have been struggling for a month without electricity.

“We decided to shut the electrical department down because of their empty promises. Our fight won’t stop until this matter is attended to as a matter of urgency,” Mr Tsotetsi said.

“We call upon the community to unite and fight against those looting from our town.”

Mr Louis Thabethe, community activist, confirmed that the municipal electrical department offices in Walter Sisulu Drive were closed. The gates were blocked.

According to Mr Thabethe, the community in Sakhile are demanding that the municipality fix their electricity which has been off for nearly four weeks.

A transformer was stolen during Lekwa’s load-shedding.

“The community is fed-up after different reasons were given for the delay in fixing their electricity,” Mr Thabethe said.

“They have been told that a wrong transformer was delivered and will be sent back, or that the municipality has no money to buy the transformer, or that the purchase order has not been signed.”

Mr Tsotetsi said on September 1, that the community will again protest on Tuesday.
The Standerton Advertiser sent a WhatsApp-message to the communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on September 1.

Comment was requested on the electricity problem.
