Municipality fights transgressions of cemetery by-laws

The municipality said they commence with the clearing of all unwanted structures in terms of their by-laws of the cemetery and will issue notice to those families who have installed memorial stones against the provision of the by-laws and contrary to the permission given to them.

Govan Mbeki Municipality said some residents are transgressing cemetery by-laws by installing unwanted structures, some of which are negatively affecting the aesthetic of the cemetery.

In a statement, the municipality said there have been several transgressions of the municipality’s cemetery by-laws as published in the extraordinary Provincial Notice No2385 of 11 November 2014.

The municipality said some people have engaged in activities that are prohibited at cemeteries which includes play or cause to play any musical instruments or apparatus without the prior consent of the officer in charge.

Parking or driving vehicles at the place of burial, planting of trees and other plants on top of graves and installing tombstones on Saturday or Sunday, including public holidays and after 17:00, installing full memorial stones at an area designated for headstones only in the berm section, the municipality said they can do so only if they are given
permission.

The municipality said the cemetery by-law consultation to the community was conducted before being adopted by the council in 2014.

The municipality said they have introduced control and management of informal settlement by-laws but it will be implemented once all community consultations and other processes are concluded.
