Mr Abednego Kabini (51) was run over by a municipal TLB two months ago and is still suffering from pain.
The driver’s dismissive attitude towards the accident is adding further insult to Mr Kabini’s injuries.
According to Mr Kabini, the driver of the tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB) told him that it was a mistake and that everyone makes mistakes.
The incident happened on the road next to the eMbalenhle Mall on July 22.
“I was crossing the road when a speeding TLB’s front-loading bucket snagged me and dragged me to the ground.
“The driver only stopped when onlookers shouted at him, but he lifted the loading bucket and I eventually fell. I sustained head and feet injuries,” Mr Kabini explained.
Those who witnessed the accident forced the TLB driver to call for an ambulance, which, according to Mr Kabini, did not arrive.
Mr Kabini said the police arrived and took down his statement as well as that of the TLB driver.
The ambulance only pitched up after the police phoned and Mr Kabini was then transported to Evander Hospital.
Mr Kabini claims he now has difficulty sleeping because of constant pain.
“I cannot even lie down in bed because of the pain. I sleep while sitting upright on my couch, and I use a broomstick to walk because I lost the crutches I received in the hospital.
“My heart aches when the sun sets because I know that I will not sleep,” said Mr Kabini.
He said that driver has not even bothered to check up on him.
Ms Khabo Nhlapo, Mr Kabini’s sister, said the family still looking at what action to take about her brother’s health.
“We did not yet report the matter to the Govan Mbeki Municipality. We will soon have a family meeting where we will decide.
“We have spoken to the police bout the statement they took from my brother,” said Ms Nhlapo.
“The police said an accident record was opened and they will also assist if needed,” she said.
Mr Donald Green, acting head of communication at Govan Mbeki Municipality, said the accident took place on a busy road in eMbalenhle. The police attended to the scene and are investigating the matter.
Lieut-Col Andries Tshabalala, eMbalenhle Police head of the detectives said Mr Kabini must go to the police station if he wants any further information in this case.
