eMbalenhle Ext 18 residents are accusing the Govan Mbeki Municipality of failing to maintain its electricity network.
They pointed out a transformer which looks as if it is about to topple to the ground at any moment.
The residents believe the transformer might fall at any time and cause serious injuries or death.
They claim to have regularly reported this transformer to the municipality since last year but, although the employees in electricity section did go to look at problem, they have done nothing to repair it.
“We are living in fear especially when it is windy. Our children don’t realise the danger and often play in the area.,” said Ms Maria Mashaba, a concerned community member.
She wonders where are the leaders when the community needs them. Ms Mashaba said they take photos and then disappear.
“We want the municipality to come and explain to us who must fix this transformer,” she said.
eMbalenhle residents are facing many challenges with electricity and unending load-shedding, and transformers that are either incorrectly installed or leaking oil.
The executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, said the municipality is following a program of visiting all areas of the municipality with service delivery challenges.
He said their program began in Leandra and will move to eMbalenhle where he will be able to comment on how the municipality plans to deal with all transformers and electricity
challenges of eMbalenhle.
