Govan Mbeki Municipality plans to spend about R26 million on a sewerage project at Eendracht.
This was said by the executive mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma during the sod-turning ceremony held in the area on Thursday, October 7.
He said they are building the sewer network in the area because residents are suffering with septic tanks that need to be drained regularly by the municipality.
“As we are in summer, these septic thanks becomes a problem because they flood when it rains and this requires us to keep on sending trucks to drain them.
“It is expensive if we keep on doing that. Septic tanks also undermines human dignity. We want to see everyone using water borne toilets,” said Mr Zuma.
He said they want the contractor to complete the project between June and December, next year.
He also said the project will open job opportunities for residents from Eendracht and Lebohang.
Mr Zuma warned the contractor not to compromise quality by taking short cuts.
He also said the municipality does not want to run after the contractor because of poor work that was done or incomplete work.
The contractor was not clear on when are they going to begin the project.
