Taps in Lebohang dry for a week

They alleged that a small scale farmer is using the reservoir yard for his livestock and he is the only one with an access key.

Community members of Lebohang said they spent a whole week without water.

They are accusing Govan Mbeki Municipality of not communicating with them and also not sending water tankers to supply them with water.

Residents also said their local clinics sometimes operate without water for days while sick people need to carry water bottles.

“We see that our municipality doesn’t care about us, we are confused about what is happening.

“When we asked the recently elected councillors about the water, they told us that they were waiting to be sworn in before they can begin to service us.

“The community we see this as a problem because they didn’t tell us that before we voted for them,” said Mr Rooi Mtsweni, a resident.

Residents also said those living at Ext 16 phases 1, 2 and 21 are suffering the most with regards to water. They claim the reservoir in that area is now a grazing pasture for goats.

They alleged that a small scale farmer is using the reservoir yard for his livestock and he is the only one with an access key.

“How can the municipal property be controlled by an individual, we have a problem here,” said Mr Sipho Skhonde.

“We don’t have water while we have a water reservoir that doesn’t assist us, we have to wake up at night to check if we have water because we are only supplied at night.

“GMM must give us clarity on when are we going to get water like other sections,” said Mr Skhonde.

Some residents claim that there is no pump at the reservoir to pump the water to the houses.

Mr Lucky Mhlongo, Govan Mbeki municipal communication officer, said a water pipe had burst at Leandra last week and the community had been notified about it.

He said the municipality’s pipe repair work was completed and water was restored.

Mr Mhlongo also said the reservoir had been vandalised and the pump damaged.

He appealed to residents to report to the municipality when they see a suspicious-looking person touching municipal property.

Mr Mhlongo vowed to investigate the complaint that the reservoir yard is used as grazing land.
