The Mpumalanga Youth Council Organisation is facing a big challenge with a blocked sewer affecting their services as a drop-in centre that offers nutritional and educational support, life skills programmes and computer literacy classes in Ext 26, eMbalenhle.
Mr Gcina Nkosi, the treasurer, said the sewage problem is causing unhygienic conditions and the children are unable to move around because of the bad smell from the sewage spill.
“The health department and other government departments advised us to temporarily close until this problem is fixed.
“The kids are exposed to health issues such as skin problems, respiratory system problems and hepatitis.
“We have reported this to the municipality several times and on many occasions and now we don’t know what else to do,” said Mr Nkosi.
The sewage spill has flooded the roads and the stench is unbearable.
Mr Nkosi appealed to the municipality to urgently attend to the problem.
“Appropriate steps need to be taken immediately because our sponsors want to host a Christmas party for the kids, but with this blocked sewer and the bad road, the sponsors would not be able to get to them.
Mr Lucky Mhlongo, municipality communication officer, said they cannot respond until they do facts findings on the matter.
