Grootdraai Dam is slightly increasing.
According to a media statement of the Department of Water and Sanitation, dated January 26, the dam, forming part of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) in the Gert Sibande District, is rising and spilling.
The department’s weekly state of reservoirs report of 24 January shows that Grootdraai Dam recorded a further 0,9% increase from last week’s 102,3% to 103,2%.
Other listed dams that recorded improvements in the district include Jericho Dam increasing from 98,7% to 100,1%, Westoe from 93,9% to 99,0% and Morgenstond from 99,2% to 99,8%.
On the decline mode, Nooitgedacht Dam dropped from 97,3% to 90,8%, Vygeboom from 102,3% to 101,5% and Heyshope from 101,0% to 100,5%.
The report also shows that the average water levels in Mpumalanga continue to rise, recording a slight increase from last week’s 92,4% to 92,5%.
The department encouraged the public to be responsible water users and use the available water wisely, sparingly, and put more emphasis on water conservation as South Africa is a dry and water-scarce country.
They also urged those on riverbanks to move to higher ground when river levels begin increasing, to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
