Amersfoort Police act swiftly to arrest alleged drug peddler

Police also found an extra two sachets of dagga and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Amersfoort Police apprehended a 34-year-old man in Amersfoort on Wednesday, March 9 in connection with dealing in drugs.

In a statement, the provincial commissioner of police, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, voiced her appreciation.

Sachets of nyaope were found.

The arrest comes after police received information about a man, on an underground trip from Gauteng to mid-town, Amersfoort, carrying a bag of drugs.

Police acted swiftly and when the man arrived in Amersfoort with his luggage at about 17:00, he was unaware that police were waiting for him.

As soon as the man noticed their presence, he quickly got into a blue, Toyota Conquest, which police believe might be linked to the man’s mission.

The said vehicle reportedly drove off and as police drew nearer, the driver ignored calls to stop.

A chase between police and the Toyota ensued.

The suspect, who was still carrying his load, was then dropped off next to the municipal offices in Amersfoort.

He then began to run on foot, but police got out of the police car as well, and caught up with him in a short time.

Meanwhile the said vehicle fled, but police are following leads regarding the car.

The suspect was searched and two plastic bags, stashed with nyaope sachets, were found in his possession.

Police also found an extra two sachets of dagga and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The street value of the drugs are estimated at about R48 000.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged.

He was expected to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, March 11, facing charges of dealing in drugs.

Lieut-Gen Manamela thanked the public for their unwavering support to police’s efforts of rooting out crime.

“Providing us with such information about criminal activities, will enable us to reach our ultimate goal of safety for all citizens,” she concluded.
