Govan Mbeki mayor wants these roads to be usable for the community of eMbalenhle

“While we are still waiting for that process of appointing the right company, the community should be able to use the roads,” said Mayor Zuma.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality executive mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma wants two roads that contractors left incomplete, to be temporarily gravelled and usable to the community.

Zuma said this when he was initially opening his five days cleaning programme known as Ijima Lokuhlwengisa at Ext 1, eMbalenhle, on Monday, March 28.

This campaign began two years ago to fight illegal dumping throughout the municipality.

The roads to which Zuma referred, had initially been given to a contractor to rehabilitate. However, the project was never completed.

The mayor said GMM has now begun to fix the roads because the contractors failed to execute their obligation.

Govan Mbeki municipality started to re-graveling the extension 1 eMbalenhle road

“The municipality is now doing the work ourselves because our community can no longer suffer.

“We want to ensure these roads are usable for the community, while we also want to prevent children from drowning.

“This is a temporary solution. The rehabilitation projects will continue once we get a suitable and qualified contractor to do the work,” said Zuma.

He said the municipality received tender bids from some companies, but GMM will first investigate them to ensure that the right contractor is appointed who is capable of fixing these roads.

“While we are still waiting for that process of appointing the right company, the community should be able to use the roads,” said Zuma.

Govan Mbeki Municipality began regraveling the Ext 1 eMbalenhle road.

Motorists are concerned about two roads of which the construction has not been finished since the beginning of last year and said they must often repair their cars because of the state of these roads.

This comes after residents of Ext 1, eMbalenhle recently voiced their concern about the incomplete road in their neighbourhood turning into a dam. They feared for their children’s safety.

Residents told the newspaper that their children like to play in the water.

They blame Govan Mbeki Municipality for hiring incompetent contractors.
