Armed cable thieves target eMbalenhle’s wastewater treatment works

The previous theft impacted the community because all the pumps stations stopped working.

A security guard was allegedly shot in the leg when men armed with guns overpowered security guards who were on duty at the eMbalenhle Wastewater Treatment Works on Sunday night, July 10.

According to the municipality, the criminals proceeded to cut electricity cables that supply power to the plant.

It is alleged that one of the security guards was also assaulted by those criminals.

The theft of electric cables from the mini sub-station of eMbalenhle’s water treatment works has impacted the community because all pumps have stopped functioning.

Last month, the municipality also opened a case of cable theft at eMbalenhle Police Station after electricity supply cables at the same wastewater treatment work in eMbalenhle were stolen.

The theft impacted the community because all the pump stations stopped working.

eMbalenhle Police confirmed the incident and said a case of damaging and tampering with municipal infrastructure was opened.

According to Const Busi Mthethwa, the eMbalenhle Police spokesperson, the complainant stated that they notice something was wrong at the mini sub-station while patrolling the sewer plant.

While they were still checking the mini-sub, two shots were fired and the complainant (a security guard) ran to the police station to alert the police.

The police rushed to the plant where they found that cables were cut in the mini sub-station and the suspects already fled the scene.

The theft of the minisub electric cables at eMbalenhle Water Treatment Works has impacted on the community because all pumps stopped functioning.

Mthethwa denied rumours that a security guard had been shot.

Donald Green, the acting manager of communication, said the matter is still under investigation and the municipality is calling anyone with information to come forward.

“We cannot divulge issues of security in public.
