Maria Old Age Home opens doors in Evander

Maria Old Age Home provides care for frail residents and is open to pensioners from the age of 60 years.

EVANDER – The Maria Old Age Home officially opened its doors with an opening ceremony at 43 Toulouse Street in Evander on Saturday, October 1.

MOAH is a seven-year dream come true for founder Zamah Khosa, who dedicated MOAH in honour of her mother Maria, who died at the age of 42 from bone cancer in 2005.

Zamah cared for her mother when she fell ill.

“I was just a child when I had to care for my mother who became ill and I grew to love caring for the elderly and the sick,” said Zamah.

With her vision and goal in place to open MOAH, Zamah joined hands with directors Barbara Hall, Abigail Jean-Pierre and Present Khosa.

MOAH has registered seven years ago, however, Zamah said it took a lot of preparing, strategising and financial resources to get to this point.

MOAH provides care for frail residents and is open to pensioners from the age of 60 years. They also cater for elder persons with special needs from the age of 40 years old.

MOAH is also a day drop-off centre that assists families who care for their elderly but are unable to take care of them while away from home.

Mining management previously used a huge house which can accommodate 35 residents.

MOAH has an open homely feel, which Zamah says is very important for every elderly person to feel like they are at home and are being cared for.

“We are a family, we are not just caregivers or directors. We want our residents to feel comfortable and safe. This is your home,” said Zamah.

The board members of MOAH are Sr D Hunter, Christa Britz, Pastor Dalene Basson, Jean Ward and Nkosinathi Shongwe.

Qualified caregivers are Desiree Noorman, Martha Mutimba, Gladys Gombahari and Rumbidzai Chitiyo.

MOAH is a non-profitable facility which depends on the income from its elderly residents and also public funding.
The facility still needs more beds, bedside tables, wardrobes, dining tables with chairs and much more.

If you want to donate or for more information contact Zamah Khosa on 071 593 1929 or Abby Jean-Pierre on 074 433 4421 or the MOAH facility on 017 632 1639.
