Water levels at Grootdraai Dam stand at 109.0%
The other listed dams in the Gert Sibande District also recorded improvements, with only Jericho Dam dropping from 88.1% to 88.0%. Vygeboom and Westoe dams remained unchanged at 100.3% and 73.3%.
Grootdraai Dam in the Integrated Vaal River System in Mpumalanga bounced back to above 100% after some weeks of continuous decline.
According to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) weekly state of reservoirs report, dated November 14, the dam recorded a 17.6% increase from last week’s 91.4% to 109.0%.
This is much better than the same period last year when the water levels stood at 69.3%.
The other listed dams in the Gert Sibande District also recorded improvements, with only Jericho Dam dropping from 88.1% to 88.0%. Vygeboom and Westoe dams remained unchanged at 100.3% and 73.3%.
On the positive and improvement side, Nooitgedacht Dam increased from 96.6% to 100.1%, Morgenstond from 99.1% to 99.7% and Heyshope from 99.3% to 100.8%.
In terms of the provincial overview, the average levels recorded a 4.4% improvement, increasing from 89.3% to 93.7%.
In the Water Management Areas (WMA), the Olifants recorded a 4.1% increase from 78.9% to 83.0% and the Inkomati-Usuthu recorded a 1.1% increase from 93.2% to 94.3%.
The department encouraged the public to continue using water wisely and sparingly and reminded the public that every drop counts as South Africa is a water-scarce country.
