Shop owners in Standerton urge community and other business to donate
Christmas boxes will be handed out to families in need and the elderly.
Owners of a pawn shop in Standerton, annually give back to the community by giving out Christmas boxes to families in need.
Barbara Sheppard said because of the nature of their business, they noticed how many people do not make ends meet anymore because of the hard economic times.
“Some of these people are in such dire straits, that they do not even know where the next meal is going to come from,” said Sheppard.
“This year, we particularly have many elderly people with no family who can help them.”
With their Christmas box project, Sheppard and her team try to provide each household with a month’s supply of groceries, however, this year, the need is so great that they cannot manage to feed all the households.
They now want to challenge the community as well as other business in Standerton to show their support as well and donate cash, food vouchers or non-perishable food.
Sheppard said they will even reward businesses that donate in the form of advertisements. They will post an advertisement of a business on five different groups on Facebook for two months.
These advertisements will also be set as the cover photos on these groups as well as regular posts.
Shepperd wants to bless 31 families in need this year and the goods in the Christmas boxes range from stationery for school children to groceries and toiletries and will be delivered to needy families as well as the elderly.
The grocery boxes include salt, jam, canned fish, canned vegetables, Oats, Cremora, soya mince, soup packets, pasta, chicken stock, maize, sugar, flour, cooking oil, cold drink concentrate, coffee, tea, rice, toothpaste, soap, toiletpaper, shampoo, pens, pencils, rulers, sharpeners, erasers and whiteboard markers.
If you want to donate any of these items or make a cash donation, contact Sheppard at 082 519 6164.
