SAPS’ sports campaign targets youth in Charl Cilliers
A mock arrest allowed the youth to see how people are treated when apprehended.
The Charl Cilliers SAPS hosted a youth sports campaign against drugs and crime on June 17.
Emergency services, such as the Govan Mbeki municipal fire brigade, showed the community what to do in an emergency.
The K-9 Unit showed the community the skills of their drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs. A mock arrest allowed the youth to see how people are treated when apprehended.
Muntuza Meshack Nkosi, arrested 20 years ago for gang-related crimes, spoke to the youth so they won’t follow his steps.

Nkosi asked them to put their faith and trust in the police because they were there to help the community.
“If the police weren’t here to help our community, it would have been a mess. Let us leave drugs. SA never used to have a drug problem. People from overseas brought it here. Drugs break apart our families,” said Nkosi.
“Let us concentrate on our studies. Families support us and don’t want to see their kids going to prison. Let us respect those in authority who help us so that we won’t end up in prison,” said Nkosi.
Later, the U15 soccer teams from CC Stars and Madis Academy faced off on the field. Their coaches and the community supported them.
