Correctional Service officials compete in squash tournament in Secunda

The Squash National Championships, hosted by the Bethal management area at the Sasol Recreational Club from October 2 to 5, saw officials from various provinces compete for top spots.

Correctional Service officials from various regions competed in the Squash National Championships, held at the Sasol Recreational Club in Secunda from October 2 to 5.

The Bethal management area hosted the event.

This was the third national squash championship hosted for correctional service employees and has seen tremendous growth and interest.

This year, 80 officials from Mpumalanga, Free State, Northern Cape, Western Cape, KZN, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Gauteng took part.

Such an event aims to help improve correctional service employees’ health and wellness and maximise productivity levels at the workplace.

“Sport in general is growing. More and more people want to take part in a sport than joining a gym as the only means to keep fit,” said Siphiwe Mahlangu, Bethal communications manager.

He said squash is one of the sports where there is a full-body workout. Bethal acting area commissioner Dominic Zulu said the nature of the work officials do is stressful.

“This is to help improve the wellness and well-being of our officials. Besides the benefits of keeping fit, it is also therapeutic and helps relieve stress levels,” said Zulu.

He said this tournament is also a great way of networking with officials from other provinces.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the officials,” said Zulu.
