Fashion designer from Standerton loves working with denim
His passion for fashion started in 2018 when he joined Gert Sibande College to study marketing.
Joy Joyful Mdluli loves everything to do with fashion. He uses old denim to make backpacks and other fashion items.
His passion for fashion started in 2018 when he joined Gert Sibande College to study marketing. Mdluli now has his sights set on clothing construction.
“The college told us to enhance a product or devise a new product. I decided to use pencil cases, toiletry bags, and side bags made out of denim,” said Mdluli.
He bought denim material to keep him going when he could not find jeans to cut out the fabric needed.
The 24-year-old operates from Sakhile and has a stall at Hooka-holics, where young people promote and showcase their talent.
“The community of Sakhile has been supportive. They give me their old denim jeans so I can make something stunning out of them. I also knit and repair old clothes. I sell my products through word of mouth,” said Mdluli.
He advised young people to get educated, find something they love and feel passionate about and start building from there.
He added that young people should never be afraid to ask for help.

“I see this business growing, having its stalls across different cities in SA. I want to build my own mall called Qombo-nation.
“A drop of water inspired the idea because where there is water, it means there is life and opportunity,” said the young Mdluli.
He said his clothes logo is the map of Africa because the continent is the motherland and hope. Mdluli said the community of Standerton has been amazing in his journey as a fashion designer.
He said the youth must seize opportunities and join the Gert Sibande College to get skills to empower themselves.
