Sasol recognises top-performing matriculants in the Sasol HighFlyer Programme
Twenty learners from Region 7 got full scholarship bursaries from Sasol, allowing them to study at any university of their choosing.
Sasol recognised the 20 top-performing matriculants in Ekangala on January 29 for achieving exceptional marks in the 2023 matric exams.
The top-performing matriculant in the Sasol HighFlyer Programme from the City of Tshwane Region 7 was Molopo Montlenyana from Zithobeni Secondary School.
He received a full Sasol bursary to continue his academic career at a tertiary institution of his choice. Montlenyana attained 98% in mathematics, 88% in physical sciences and 85% in life sciences.
The top 20 matriculants attained an overall average of 80% in mathematics, life sciences and physical sciences.
This achievement is a testament to the Sasol HighFlyer Programme, which seeks to harness the potential of academically talented Grade 12 learners from Ekandustria fenceline communities (Region 7).

This happens through Saturday and vacation matriculant support interventions in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, focusing on mathematics, physical sciences and life sciences.
According to Thuli Mbuli, the head of community affairs at Sasol’s Sasolburg and Ekandustria Operations, the purpose of the Sasol HighFlyer Programme Learner Matric Awards is to recognise, celebrate and reward the top-performing matriculants in Region 7 schools.
“The matriculant awards programme is expected to encourage matriculants to choose subjects that will lead to STEM careers and strive for academic performance excellence, increase the pass rate in the Ekandustria Operations fenceline schools, enhance access to institutions of higher learning and create a pipeline of skilled individuals for Sasol and the country.
“These will strengthen the relationships between Sasol and its partners and position Sasol as a future employer of choice to the matriculants,” said Mbuli.
Sasol awarded 172 bursaries towards tertiary studies in 2024.

While 117 mainstream bursaries and 49 Sasol Foundation bursaries were awarded aimed at increasing tertiary education opportunities in STEM, six bursaries went to qualifying matriculants from the Sasol’s fenceline communities in Gauteng North, the Fezile Dabi District in the Free State, Mpumalanga, and parts of Kwazulu-Natal.
These bursaries can also be used for university studies in non-STEM-related fields. Sasol bursaries cover expenses, including registration and tuition fees, books, pocket money, meals and accommodation.
The bursary offers a once-off computer and calculator allowance, transport costs, and psycho-social support.
The top 20 achievers who participated in the programme received a laptop, bag and certificate of excellence.
The matriculants who received the bursaries are Montlenyana Molopo (Zithobeni Secondary School), Mxolisi Nkosi (Zithobeni Secondary School), Thato Charity Makobong (Strauss Secondary School), Nhlanhla Lerato Mnguni (Mpumelelo Secondary School), Rabelani Mushanganyisi (Zithobeni Secondary School), Kgantso Julian Mashishi (Ekangala Engineering School of Specialisation), Mbali Mashiane (Ekangala Engineering School of Specialisation), Thabang Kolane Phasha (Ekangala Engineering School of Specialisation), Rebabaletswe Matebane (Lingitjhudu Secondary School), Fortunate Sanny Selepe (Mahlenga Secondary School), Sebabatso Lekgale Rachoene (Cultura High School), Nkazimulo Angel Mabena (Dan Kutumela Secondary School), Gentle Bongane Siboza (Dan Kutumela Secondary School), Kgotso Sebothoma (Lingitjhudu Secondary School), Kamogelo Karabo Mailula (Cultura High School), Sibongakonke Dladla (Lingitjhudu Secondary School), Siyabonga Lucky Dhladhla (Lingitjhudu Secondary School), Busisiwe Paulinah Ngomane (Mpumelelo Secondary School), Innocent Mbali Msiza (Lingitjhudu Secondary School) and Lungile Theophilus Mahlangu (Cultura High School).
