Scholar taxi accident in Cullinan leaves 22 children injured

Of the 22 primary school learners, four had serious injuries and two adults also sustained injuries.

Emergency services had to rush more than 20 primary school learners to hospital after the taxi in which they were transported to Cullinan collided with an oncoming truck on February 9.

The scholar taxi from Refilwe was packed with 22 children when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

It hit the island at the four-way intersection in Cullinan, causing the taxi to veer into oncoming traffic.

The taxi hit an oncoming truck from African Star Park in Ekandustria. This truck was pulling out of parking when it collided with the taxi.

“I tried to stop, but the taxi was going just too fast,” explained the truck driver, Johannes Mtsweni.

Of the 22 primary school learners, four had serious injuries. Two adults also sustained injuries.

The patients were transported to various hospitals such as Die Wilgers, Montana, Bronkhorstspruit and Mamelodi.
