Promises of a home for ill twins from eMzinoni remain empty

Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Mandla Ndlovu, promised Mkhonza would have a house by October last year but the small family is still residing in their two-room shack in eMzinoni.

Phumzile Mkhonza and her twins from eMzinoni have lost hope in bettering their living conditions.

The 17-year-old Lwandile and Lwanele Mkhonza suffer from a rare autosomal recessive disorder known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) that leads to aggressive skin and other types of cancers.

Lwandile is partially blind in one eye and Lwanele is completely blind because of the disease. Mom Phumzile has lost hope in getting a house for her twins because of unfulfilled promises from the politicians.

Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Mandla Ndlovu, promised Mkhonza would have a house by October last year but the small family is still residing in their two-room shack in eMzinoni.

Ndlovu made this statement at the Mpumalanga Premier imbizo held at the Risko Fakude Stadium in eMbalenhle last September.

Nothing has come of this promise and the twins are still daily subjected to the elements that exacerbate their already declining health.

Mkhonza is a widow and the full-time caregiver of her sons. The trio has also fallen prey to criminals who attacked them at night.

Mkhonza said the house the MEC initially wanted to buy was the centre of a family feud.

She was then told the Govan Mbeki Municipality will be building her a house, which is supposed to be completed by the end of this month.

However, Mkhonza was recently taken to a site in eMzinoni’s Welas section where they would build the new house, only to discover that it is in the middle of an existing road. According to Mkhonza, communication from the municipality has since stopped.
