Thomas Nhlabathi debaters from eMbalenhle are the best

Magagamela said it allows learners to showcase their talent, confidence and ability to communicate.

The Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School from eMbalenhle won the 2024 Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) Speaker’s Schools Debate Competition held at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda on April 18.

The competition was held in partnership with the Department of Education and sponsored by Thungela.

Learners from local secondary schools are invited to compete in this annual event hosted by the GMM speaker’s office.

The municipality’s speaker, Fikile Magagamela said the event aims to promote reading and research among learners.

Magagamela also said it gives learners the chance to showcase their talent and confidence and their ability to communicate.

ā€œLearners receive a topic that they will debate about and includes things currently happening in our country. It gives them an opportunity to do their research about that topic before the event.

ā€œOur role as the local government is to encourage young people to use every opportunity fruitfully. We also want to bring back the originality of education where we used to debate.

ā€œDebate is promoting self-esteem while it entertains at the same time and promotes freedom of expression,ā€ said Magagamela.

The KI Twala Secondary School also from eMbalenhle took second place and Highveld Park High School was third.
