Well-known Bethal businessman Ron Shepherd dies

The memorial service for the late Ronald Shepherd (78), will be held at the Alora Collective venue, in Bethal, on September 13.

Long-time resident and well-known businessman, Ronald (Ron) Shepherd (78), died at Mediclinic Highveld in Trichardt on September 2.

This follows a challenging month and a half battling to recover from abdominal surgery. The news has deeply saddened many, both near and far.

Born on June 23, 1946, in Swartkop, Ron spent his youth in Edenvale before attending boarding school at Settlers, near Warmbaths. He later moved to Germiston.

An exceptional athlete, Ron excelled in cricket, rugby, swimming, and tennis earning his colours in all.

Following his schooling, he served in the defensive navy for two years before moving on to the merchant navy, where he spent several more years.


Ron Shepherd (78) died on September 3, after a long battle recovering from abdominal surgery.

In 1971, after completing his studies at Technical College, Ron began working for National Trading Company (NTC) in Johannesburg.

Five years later, in 1976, NTC branched out to Bethal, where Ron became a proud resident.

Always an ambitious man, in 1985, Ron founded National Fluid Control (NFC), which continues to thrive after 39 successful years in operation.

Throughout his career, Ron received numerous awards, including businessman of the year. He was an active member of the Bethal community, serving as president of the Rotary Club and playing a role in the annual Potato Festival.

His passion for tennis was particularly notable, and at the age of 52, he won the men’s doubles championship, demonstrating his enduring competitive spirit.

“Ron came from humble beginnings, lived a modest life, and always carried himself with pride, integrity, honesty, and humility,” said his family, who described him as a strong leader who was known for his generosity and compassion.

“His presence left a lasting impact on everyone who crossed his path. Ron’s legacy will live on, and the business will continue in his honour.”

His wife, Dimples, extends her heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at MediClinic Highveld ICU, particularly Dr Mahomed Bahadur, Dr Gcina Sihlangu, and Dr Lelani Booysen, for their dedicated care.

She also expresses her gratitude to everyone who provided emotional support during this difficult time.

Ron is survived by his wife, Dimples, his brother, Clive, his children, Lani, Ryan, Jan, Anthony, and Chantelle, and his seven grandchildren.

A memorial service and celebration of Ron’s life will be held on September 13 at 11:00 at the Alora Collective Venue in Bethal.
