A page a day keeps this Standerton doctor thinking

Our friendly local doctor, Eric Louw recently published his first book, The Complexity of Being Human. Full of controversy and well-researched facts, this book is not for the closed-minded.

The human brain is a complex organ, capable of multiple extremes, such as great philosophy and even greater chaos.

Dr Eric Louw gives us a look at his psyche and way of thinking in his recently published book, The Complexity Of Being Human.

Louw is well-known in the community and has been a medical practitioner in Standerton since 1990.

His book is available in Afrikaans and English and is described as a collection of thoughts meant to challenge the reader to see a different perspective.

“People have ideas and thoughts they do not typically discuss. I have found the best way to make sense of these thoughts is to separate them from yourself by speaking or writing about them,” said Louw.

Among the many topics Louw addressed in his book, readers can expect a thorough, well-researched discussion on evolution, religion, psychological factors and much more.

While the book contains many controversial thoughts, it was not intended to spark debate, but rather evoke a deeper way of thinking.

Louw wrote The Complexity of Being Human before the 2024 elections, a fitting tribute considering a large portion of the book, covers politics and political factors within South Africa.

“As a great admirer of philosophy, I have drawn inspiration from philosophical guidelines and many Roman philosophers,” added Louw.

He admittedly found inspiration through the complex ideas of German philosopher and culture critic, Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as Origin of Species author, Charles Darwin and Michaelangelo.

“I admire these great thinkers’ way of life and their approach to higher thinking,” explained Louw.

In conclusion to a whirlwind of new thoughts, historical facts and a look into the future of our nation, Louw leaves the reader with one final, yet excruciatingly important statement.

He said: “Try to laugh more and cry less. We have one life, make the best of it, respect yourself and you will respect others. Try to stay positive, even in times when pessimism surrounds you.”

The Complexity of Being Human is available at Louw’s medical practice and Maximed Pharmacy, and can also be ordered at [email protected]
