Daredevils run for cancer in Secunda

The Hollard Daredevil Run is a nationwide phenomenon that started 15 years ago and creates awareness around prostate and testicular cancers.

It was ready, set and go for men who took part in the 5km Hollard Daredevil Run at Lake Umuzi on November 1. About 45 men, both young and old, made a bold statement and ran in their Speedos to support prostate and testicular awareness.

The Hollard Daredevil Run is a nationwide phenomenon that began 15 years ago. It raises money for the Cancer Association of South Africa and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa for testing in under-resourced areas and to increase awareness, support and research.

This event empowers SA men to be sure rather than unsure about their health.

“Wearing a Speedo in public requires courage, just as it takes courage to take charge of your health by getting regular screenings and staying informed.

“The Hollard Daredevil Run is dedicated to every man and boy in SA affected by cancer or looking to spread awareness,” said Allistair Khanyi, the head of brand and communications at Hollard.

“By shining a light on men’s health, Hollard enables men to take control of their future well-being,” said Khanyi.

Prostate cancer will affect one in six men in their lifetime and is expected to be the most common cancer among men in SA by 2030.

Black African men face a 60% higher risk of developing prostate cancer compared to other population groups. The survival rate in men whose prostate cancer is detected early enough is 95%.

Although less common, testicular cancer remains the leading cancer among young men aged 15 to 35 years, impacting about one in 250 males. If treated early, the cure rate for testicular cancer can be as high as 98%.

“Thank you to all the brave 2024 Hollard Daredevil Run participants. Together, we are making a meaningful impact in the fight against prostate and testicular cancer,” said Khanyi.
