Dam levels continue to drop
The DWS warns residents to use water sparingly as dam levels continue to drop.
The Department of Water and Sanitation released a media statement on November 6, detailing the state of reservoirs in Mpumalanga and urging residents to use water more sparingly as dam levels in Gert Sibande continue to drop.
According to the statement, all listed dams in the district continue to suffer declines in water volume.
“The majority of listed dams are now under 80% with only Vygeboom and Heyshope hovering above 90%. However, these dams have also recorded declines,” indicated the statement.
Grootdraai Dam has dropped from 71.3% to 70.5%, Nooitgedacht from 76.9% to 76.2%, Vygeboom has declined from 91.4% to 90.1%, Jericho Dam has recorded a decrease from 67.4% to 66.3%.
Morgenstond Dam dropped from 68.4% to 67.6%, Heyshope from 95.7% to 95.3% and Westoe Dam dropped to 35.3%.
“The declining levels is a reflection of the Mpumalanga provincial situation in terms of water levels,” the release stated.
According to the DWS weekly report, average dam levels in |Mpumalanga declined from 80.0% to 79.1%.
The average water levels in Gert Sibande dropped from 80.0% to 79.4%. The DWS reminds the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country.
